Embedding Objects in Epoxy Floors
Why has epoxy flooring become the fastest growing sector of the flooring industry? There are many reasons, but arguably the most prominent, is the shift to more decorative applications. Epoxy used to be available in a handful of colors and when applied, would look like a painted floor. This was great if you needed industrial strength to handle forklift traffic in your warehouse and looks were secondary, but not so great if you wanted an extremely durable floor for your living room that also looks nice. As the epoxy flooring industry evolved many more decorative applications were developed. Now you can get the same industrial strength floor used in a warehouse or airplane hangar with a beautiful custom finish.
What is Metallic Epoxy and is it Right for You?
One of the hottest current trends in the concrete coatings industry is metallic epoxy. It has been around for quite some time, but until a few years ago, there were only a few manufacturers really promoting it, and even fewer installers using it. A metallic epoxy floor is a 100% solids two part epoxy that is mixed with reflective pigments or mica flakes. As the epoxy cures out the aggregates suspended in the epoxy move or ‘flow’ creating looks never before possible with epoxy flooring. An artistic installer can utilize multiple colors and techniques to generate even more results which allows the customer to completely customize their floor.
Right Place, Right Time, Right Product: A Metallic Epoxy Tale
Sometime business just comes down to being in the right place at the right time. A while back, I stopped to get my hair cut. The place is in a strip mall and the space next door had been vacant for quite some time. As I was walking to the door, I noticed a guy going into the formerly vacant space which was obviously being renovated for a new business. I followed him inside and asked about his plans for flooring. He happened to be the owner and was going to have an epoxy flake broadcast floor installed in what would be a new yogurt shop. I asked if he had heard of metallic epoxy flooring, showed him some pictures and within a matter of minutes, had a verbal commitment to have us do the install.
