Professional vs. DIY Epoxy Garage Floors

We get asked all the time about DIY epoxy kits sold at the box stores.  These stores, as well as some paint stores that sell similar kits, want you to believe installing an epoxy floor is just like painting.  If you can paint, you can install epoxy.  While this may be true with the little kits they sell, there is much more that goes into installing a long lasting floor coating and good reasons why you might experience sticker shock when you get a price from a professional if you have already priced out the box store kits.  So here are my thoughts on the DIY vs professional epoxy question.

What is Metallic Epoxy and is it Right for You?

One of the hottest current trends in the concrete coatings industry is metallic epoxy. It has been around for quite some time, but until a few years ago, there were only a few manufacturers really promoting it, and even fewer installers using it. A metallic epoxy floor is a 100% solids two part epoxy that is mixed with reflective pigments or mica flakes. As the epoxy cures out the aggregates suspended in the epoxy move or ‘flow’ creating looks never before possible with epoxy flooring. An artistic installer can utilize multiple colors and techniques to generate even more results which allows the customer to completely customize their floor.

Baseball, Hotdogs, Metallic Epoxy and Cargo Trailers?

Some things just go well together; peanut butter and jelly, cookies and milk, baseball and hotdogs to name a few. Recently we had the opportunity to install a designer epoxy floor in a cargo trailer used to haul dirt bikes. For me, personally, metallic epoxy flooring and cargo trailers are now on that list of things that just go well together. I knew with the metallic epoxy we could create a one of a kind floor. I knew that it would look great on a trailer floor. I think I just didn’t realize how great it would actually look. Neither did the client. We were both pleasantly surprised.
