How to Choose the Best Flooring for Your Loading Dock

A loading dock can be one of the harshest environments for flooring in a commercial or industrial facility.  When you think about it, just about everything whether its raw materials or a large piece of equipment, it most likely passes through the loading dock.  The constant flow of a goods is usually accompanied by an often around the clock flow of forklifts, dolly traffic, truck drivers and dock worker who load and unload the shipments.  As if that weren’t enough, large bay doors that remain open can create thermal stress due to the temperature variance from inside to outside.  Extremely cold environments regularly use salt or de-icing agents which get brought in onto the floor surface.  Pallets can break, shipments can spill, and occasionally equipment can break and leak on the floor.  There really isn’t a surface regularly subjected to more abuse.

How to Stencil a Concrete Floor

In the multitude of options for decorative concrete, one of the easiest to make a dramatic statement is with the use of stencils.  We were recently contacted by a contractor and homeowner who were looking to finish a front porch and outdoor fireplace room.  The two concrete slabs were poured at different times, which can cause issues with coloring since each slab could possibly take stain differently.  We opted to do a micro-topping over the whole surface to give us a fresh canvas to start and to hopefully allow for a more uniform color over the entire area.

A Concrete Canvas for Art

Anyone who has even worked with concrete knows that dealing with the elements can sometimes pose problems. When the San Juan Museum of Art had the concrete slab poured for their new atrium, there were many factors that weren’t ideal.  What they got was certainly not what they were hoping for.  The uneven color and small surface cracks over the re-bar in the slab were unsightly and would only serve to detract from the art they wished to display.  We were contacted to resurface the space and resolve the issues getting it back to concrete canvas they originally wanted.
